Like Matthew Ackroyd, he was a Private in the 27th Northumberland Fusiliers (aka Tyneside Irish). He had gone to France in October 1916 and two of his brothers were also serving. He died on the first day of the battle of Arras, when it was snowing, but very good progress was being made. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in France as well as in Ireland’s Memorial Records. He is also commemorated on the window inside St Mary’s Church. They are two of five men remembered on our memorial that died in April and early May. All are commemorated on the Arras memorial.
